SUMMARY:Haiti Stores - Istwa Ayiti
DESCRIPTION:\nHaiti Stores - Istwa Ayiti  \nDate:\nSaturday, January
 29, 2011\n\nTime:\n1:00 - 6:00PM\n\nLocation:\nUcla Fowler Museum\n\n\
 nStreet:\nFor Directions, See: Www.fowler.ucla.edu\n\nCity/Town:\nLos
 Angeles, California\n\nPrice:\nFree & open to the public\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n\nPlease join us for a conversation on how Haiti's story is narrat
ed and presented in the world. We will focus on how storytelling, in t
he broadest as well as narrowest senses, has affected the country in g
eneral and in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. This public event
brings together fifteen eminent figures representing a range of storyt
ellers:journalists, novelists, historians, artists, photographers, fil
mmakers, musicians and others, outsiders and Haitians.\n\n\n\n\n\nToge
ther they will explore the many textual, visual and aural ways and lay
ers in which Haiti's story and history is represented. What is the rel
ationship between writing and facts on the ground? Who is telling Hait
i's story and how can that story be told? What emotional valences are
being drawn upon, or closed off? In bringing together this diverse gro
up of storytellers, the event will seek to build new connections and c
onversations that illuminate Haiti's intertwining past, present, and f
uture. The conversation among panelists will be moderated by Amy Wile
ntz, acclaimed writer, journalist, and professor of journalism. This e
vent will take place in conjunction with 'Fowler In Focus: Art and the
Unbreakable Spirit of Haiti,' which showcases selected works collecte
d by the Fowler Museum over the course of five decades and examines th
e capacity of art to express the tragedies and triumphs of a nation.\n
