The European Union has today formalized its additional support to the electoral process in Haiti by granting 500,000 euros ($ 688,650) to support the observation mission of the second round of the presidential and legislative elections of 20 March by the OAS-CARICOM.
This support completes that provided by the European Union for an amount of 5 million euros (6.89 million) for the organization of elections in the country and 600,000 euros ($ 826,380) to finance the observation of elections by civil society in Haiti.
This additional support aims to strengthen the capacity of the observation mission of the OAS-CARICOM to support the electoral authorities in the solving of a large part of the problem that marred the first round of elections. The International observation is a key element to the success of the electoral process which enters its second phase.
The European Union believes that the political stability and the democratic transition in Haiti are the prerequisites for successful reconstruction, of the revival of the economic growth and reduction of poverty in the country.
The democratic transition in Haiti is particularly important for the European Union which is the main international partner in the reconstruction of the country with a commitment greater than 1.2 billion euros.
