Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of Haiti for her first visit abroad, is arrived yesterday morning at the airport La Isabela, Dominican Republic. She was received to the Office of the First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez.
The two women have talked for several hours on the need to continue to strengthen cooperative ties between the two countries. "We are sister nations and our ties are very strong. Haiti will always have our support and our solidarity" stated Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez.
The wife of the President of Haiti, said that she will never forget the support received from the Dominican Republic after the earthquake last year, nd the efforts of the Dominican authorities to help the country to recover. "This is my first visit as First Lady, I wanted to come here because we share the same island [...] I also wanted to thank the First Lady and the President Fernández for the unconditional support that we received after the earthquake and the love with which they did it."
Sophia Martelly wanted to know more on the programs that are developed from the Office of the First Lady of the Dominican Republic and which are intended to encourage the poorer classes, by focusing on health, education and family.
Dr. Ligia Amada Melo, Minister of Higher Education, joined later in the meeting. Sophia Martelly, talked about bilateral activities, with greater attention to issues of prevention and disaster management, the support programs for women and children, the education projects and specifically addressed the question of values.
