The President René Préval has conducted Tuesday to the appointment of a new Director General at the head of the National Council of Telecommunications (CONATEL). The Investiture ceremony was presided by the engineer Jacques Gabriel, the Minister of Public Works, Transportation and Communication (MTPTC).
Jean Jonas Elysée, will replace Marcelin Montaigne at the head of CONATEL. Former Secretary of State to the Telecommunications and General Manager of the former telephone company TELECO (now Natcom), Mr. Jean Jonas Elysée had already occupied this position at CONATEL, fifteen years ago.
Minister Gabriel has welcomed the realizations of Marcelin Montaigne within the CONATEL that enabled the institution to play an important role in the development of the sector and the democratization of the access to the mobile telephony. The Minister has asked to the new Director General to continue the momentum, reminding him that his mission will consist also to promote the reform of legal regulations, to continue the internal consolidation and the development of the regulatory culture of this institution.
For his part, Mr. Elysée has declared he intended to facilitate the access to the population at the new services in the the areas of information and communication, and acknowledged the work accomplished by his predecessor, on which he hopes to rely in the future.
For his part, the outgoing director, Marcelin Montaigne, has welcomed of the cooperation that he received from the phone operators and media during the five years of his administration.
The decree appointing the new director of CONATEL will be published shortly in the newspaper Le Moniteur.
