The Best Representation of Haitian Entertainment, Culture, & LifeStyle
As of Wednesday October 27, 2010; Haiti’s Health Ministry reported more than 4,722 people hospitalized with Cholera (acute watery diarrhea) cases and 303 deaths reported at the facilities in St. Marc, Petite Rivière d’Artibonite, Verrettes, Mirebalais and Lascahobas, including cases confirmed in two new departments in Haiti’s north and northeast. Access to medical facilities and clean water remain major concerns, particularly in isolated rural areas.
We’ve been in communication with Partner in Health and Yele Haiti, two of the foundations we supported through the tent campaign, to see how we could continue to support them. Partners in Health provided a list of urgent needs. The main needs are clean water, water purification tablets, clorox, diapers, oral dehydration salts and IV fluids.
They are also in great need for assistance with shipping and transportation. They are transporting bags of IV fluid, which are heavier than water and the freight cost are quite high – $4,000 from Miami to Haiti and $6,000 from New York. Partners in Health asked if we or any of our supporters could assist with planes to transport IV fluids. This would be a tremendous help.
Additionally, Yele Haiti has partnered with Partners in Health to provide clean drinking water by dispatching their fleet of 14 water trucks to the communities and hospitals identified by PIH as communities most in need. Guided by PIH, Yéle is providing a total of 17,000 gallons of water each day to four hospitals and the surrounding communities in the valley along the Artibonite River, which is thought to be the source of the cholera. Yele is also assisting PIH in the set up of the dome clinics and patient mobilization.

DONNA’S MESSAGE
First we have a dream. My dream is saving lives and rebuilding Haiti. Next, there’s manifesting that dream— which takes a community of caring people — you, me, our friends and partners. At Urban Zen, we can offer a safe space, a working space, a space for partnering with the people and finding the solutions that can rebuild Haiti, while preserving its indigenous culture.
Let’s come together and dedicate ourselves to this task and to the people of Haiti. Right now, there’s a disaster that must be addressed. But the aftermaths of this disaster will be around for years to come. We can’t walk away from this and lead our daily lives as if nothing had happened. This is a wake-up call, a call to community, to caring, to something greater than ourselves, to something deep within each one of us that just knows how deeply connected we are to the spirit of Haiti.
I invite you to join us in the task of rebuilding Haiti. Let’s participate in a way that honors her rich past and her indigenous culture, and builds a bridge to a connected and sustainable future for Haiti.
Whether it’s donating money, or shoes, whether it’s purchasing a tent today, or helping Haitians rebuild their homes tomorrow, there’s something we each can do. Here at Urban Zen, we’re bringing together a group of partners with the expertise and commitment to create a conscious community of support for Haiti. Join us in offering help, hope, and relief…
On Monday, February 8, the campaign for Hope Help and Relief Haiti launched at the Urban Zen Center at Stephan Weiss Studio with an afterparty at The Standard. Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
