Please join us for a conversation on how Haiti's story is narrated and presented in the world. We will focus on how storytelling, in the broadest as well as narrowest senses, has affected the country in general and in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. This public event brings together fifteen eminent figures representing a range of storytellers:journalists, novelists, historians, artists, photographers, filmmakers, musicians and others, outsiders and Haitians.
Together they will explore the many textual, visual and aural ways and layers in which Haiti's story and history is represented. What is the relationship between writing and facts on the ground? Who is telling Haiti's story and how can that story be told? What emotional valences are being drawn upon, or closed off? In bringing together this diverse group of storytellers, the event will seek to build new connections and conversations that illuminate Haiti's intertwining past, present, and future.

The conversation among panelists will be moderated by Amy Wilentz, acclaimed writer, journalist, and professor of journalism. This event will take place in conjunction with 'Fowler In Focus: Art and the Unbreakable Spirit of Haiti,' which showcases selected works collected by the Fowler Museum over the course of five decades and examines the capacity of art to express the tragedies and triumphs of a nation.

Damon Winter, photojournalist, New York Times

Presented by the University of California Humanities Research Institute, the UCLA Fowler Museum, and the UC Irvine Program in Literary Journalism. For directions, please visit http://www.fowler.ucla.edu.
